Encounters with the Sacred

At the end of the Second World War in Europe a betrayal of epic proportions sends thousands of Slovenian Home Guards — who had fled to Austria for refuge — back to Yugoslavia. Death is certain, but for one man’s miraculous escape and another man’s courageous decision to defy military orders.

Forty years later in Toronto, we meet Spela — the teenaged daughter of Slovenian immigrants who is connected to those events in remarkable and unexpected ways.
